Bears....

Beginner Bear Making
We will make an 11" bear from high quality synthetic fur, fully jointed, and with glass eyes. These bears are not intended for very young children, but are "collector" bears. We will make our first bear by hand during two classes one week apart. There will be some sewing required at home between the two sessions.

Quilting.... Skill Builders

Machine Applique
You may choose whichever Critter Pattern Works pattern you wish, since the technique is the same. It is great fun to select fabrics to represent your critters! This class allows you to play with your machine, achieve the perfect satin stitch, and work with fusibles. One day session.

We ask that you come in before the class and choose your pattern and fabrics, so that class time is spent on the techniques.

Wed. Nov.22.............................. 9:30 - 3:30

$25.00 class fee, plus pattern & materials Trudi Wiley

Blind Stitch Applique
Here is another machine technique that allows you to apply fabric shapes to the background - this method has the advantage of remaining soft, since there doesn’t need to be a fusible layer. We will make a four block Album-style wall quilt - use Christmas colours and it can be a seasonal affair, heritage fabrics for a authentic look, or choose any colour combination that appeals to you.

Most machines execute a blind hem stitch - please enquire if you are not sure.

Bed & Lap Quilts...

Heritage Sampler II - Underground Railroad
It is commonly held that plantation slaves used the symbolism of quilt blocks to silently communicate with each other. This became particularly important for escaping slaves so they would know when to be prepared to flee, what direction to take, and where they could safely stop en route. All the quilt blocks they used are traditional ones in the public domain and we have collected some of them, researched their importance, and set our quilt in a unique design of Nancy’s that highlights the importance of the North Star during a slave’s journey to freedom. The fabrics they had at their disposal were often scraps from the Mistress’s household, and for our sample we have used reproductions from the first half of the 19th Century. The entire quilt is a pieced one, using modern methods. We’ll make 2 blocks per session over 6 sessions. In the 7th session, we will add sashing and borders.

Please come in and purchase fabrics in advance.

Wednesday afternoons:
Sept. 13-  Oct 18, plus Nov. 1..........................1:00 - 4:00

$70.00 class fee, plus materials               Nancy Edwards

“Strippy” Quilt
Here is another opportunity to learn this quick and elegant quilt. So-called “Strippy” quilts were a favourite of the quilters mid-19th century and showcased strips of their best chintz inserted between long narrow rows of simple pieced blocks.  Because they were quick to make, many more were also sewn up in calicoes during the Civil War. They then had the unusual name of “Sanitary Quilts” as the women’s groups who made them went under the umbrella name of “Sanitation Committees”. We will make ours in heritage fabrics, but you will find the pattern very adaptable to modern fabrics as well, including Christmas, if you prefer. One day session.

Please select fabrics in advance.

Fri. Sept. 22.............................9:30 - 4:00

$25.00 class fee, plus materials              Nancy Edwards

Please select and pre wash fabrics in advance.
